Ghana produces 1.7 million tonnes of plastic waste each year. Less than 2% of the waste generated are recycled. The rest ends up in landfill sites, choke our gutters and waterways leading to the annual flooding that occurs when the rain starts. The June 3 Disaster is a tragic consequence of this.

Thankfully, we do not have to re-invent the wheel when it comes to dealing with plastic waste. The tools, techniques and technologies needed to solve the plastic problem have already been pioneered and piloted elsewhere.

Countries such as Germany are practicing sustainable ways of reducing plastic use and have systems like the “PFund” which allows most plastics to be returned to producers after use for recycling.
There are rules and regulations that govern the production and use of plastics.
In Africa, countries like Kenya and Rwanda have banned plastics and this is a step in a right direction since after the ban they could create alternatives for the banned plastics.

We believe in the establishment of a legal instrument that will govern the production and use of plastics to limit or abuse and pollution from plastic waste, the ban on plastic bags will also go a long way to help increase the sales of local manufactured paper bags as well as the reuse of nylon shopping bags. Food vendors can as well go back to practicing leaf packaging and aluminum foil packages since they are highly degradable and less harmful to the environment as compared to plastics.
The fund system can also be considered for the bottle packages.

THIS PETITION IS DEMANDING A BAN ON SINGLE USE PLASTICS AND ALSO A LEGAL INSTRUMENT ON THE PRODUCTION AND USE OF OTHER PLASTICS TO HELP ENCOURAGE OUR LOCAL PAPER MAKING INDUSTRY AS WELL AS HELPING INSTILL THE CULTURE OF REUSING AS WELL AS KEEPING A GOOD AND CLEAN ENVIRONMENT. GOD BLESS OUR HOMELAND GHANA!
