NOISE AVERSION and FIRECRACKERS
WHAT IS NOISE AVERSION?
Noise aversion is a fearful or anxious response to sounds within the environment. It's what sends dogs cowering under the couch when fireworks burst in the night sky or a car backfires. The dog is distressed by the noise and wants to get away.
HOW DOES NOISE FROM CRACKERS AFFECT ANIMALS?
With Diwali just around the corner, people are excited for the festivals of light while the animals are racked with pain.
I myself isn’t an admirer of crackers and fireworks and especially not after adopting a dog and perceiving her in agony.
I know that people don’t really find this a problem, even my family doesn’t think that the noise from crackers or fireworks affect animals.
In fact dogs can hear sounds as high as 47,000 to 65,000 Hz. These are sounds that humans generally cannot receive.
The figures above stated shows that the hearing of animals is much more sensitive than it is in humans, so the explosions of fireworks are not only more disturbing to them, but they can damage their hearing more severely. Fireworks can emit sounds of up to 190 decibels (110 to 115 decibels above the range of 75 to 80 decibels where the damage to the human ear begins). Fireworks generate a higher noise level than firecrackers. And hearing loss in humans due to loud noises is well documented but for animals none is recorded because people aren’t conscious about the loss animals go through because of loud noises caused by firecrackers.
After having a pet I could see how my pet dog shivers in pain, whimpers for help, starts panting and is scared to death. The most I can do to help her is cover her with a vest or take her to a safe place or make her feel safe; for the extreme I can make this petition and ask you to sign this for the benefit of the voiceless.
