Shannon Lanigan started this petition to Government of Canada and

We have learned, listened and reflected.

Now we can no longer be silent.

As Canadians, we recognize thoughts and prayers for the atrocities suffered by Indigenous people that have happened here, on this land, in our cities, towns and communities are no longer enough. Words are no longer enough.

International eyes are on us, and this is our time to own past mistakes, grieve for those lost and implement policy that affects real, measurable and attainable change.

We are asking all Canadians of all ethnicities, backgrounds and religions to recognize the importance of this work, and to support this petition. We are stronger when we face our weaknesses together.

We are calling on the Government of Canada make change at the Federal level and to collaborate with Provincial Governments and Indigenous Leaders at the Provincial level to:

1/ Commit to funding the excavation of sites around Residential Schools across Canada to uncover their hidden truths and recognize the genocide that occurred on these lands. This work should be led in cooperation with Indigenous leaders to ensure these sites are respected and excavated without prejudice or bias. The children deserve our honour and grief and to be properly mourned within their culture.

2/ Use all Federal powers at your disposal to enforce upon Churches who participated in the Residential school program to release their records, and investigate and charge perpetrators. The only way to heal the future is to own our past mistakes.

3/ Eliminate the current education funding gap for First Nations schools. According to a report by former TD Bank economist Don Drummond, the funding gap between First Nations schools vs other schools across Canada averages around 30 percent.

We need this as a Nation.
