The day-fine starts with an estimate of the amount of spending money a person has for one day and then divides that by two—the resulting number is considered a reasonable amount of spending money to deprive the offender of. Then, based on the severity of the crime, the system has rules for how many days the offender must go without that money (as exemplified in Finland and other countries). To get the appropriate fine amount, courts would need access to every individual’s tax information. They would take the previous year's net income (not gross as that is not an accurate representation of disposable income) of the person and divide it by 365 to get the appropriate daily income.

If the day-fine becomes standardized, likely over a series of smaller more collectivist policy changes, it will allow the government to redistribute income more fairly. Much like how progressive income tax allows for the creation of more welfare programs, the day-fine or any similar progressive fining system would take more money from the rich (and less from the poor) and allow the government to direct more money towards lower-income households and individuals. Imposing a progressive fine instead of a proportional or flat rate would aid lower-income people in escaping the cycle of poverty. Harshly weighted fines on lower-income people prevent them from accessing certain necessities and also increases the division between them and law enforcement.

If day-fine is appropriately integrated into our legal system over time, the consequences would positively impact society and the economy in general. As proven with many social democracies, the more fairly wealth is distributed between its people the more the economy prospers. From a moral perspective, the aim of closing the gap of inequality especially between social classes is imperative, and a progressive fine in place of our current system would be one step closer to that goal.
