Dieter Janssen started this petition to Government of Canada / Gouvernement du Canada

Our current circumstance and for the foreseeable future, our primary method of communicating with the Government, Friends, Family, Teachers, and Work Colleagues will make most Canadians dependent on our Broadband Service for these essential connections.

The CRTC has identified the impact of limited or non-existent and otherwise costly broadband access to rural and remote areas of Canada. This now impacts all of us personally.

Rogers & Bell are an effective monopoly, choosing to increase rates within the first month of the shutdown. There is no true competition when all other providers must buy from these two. A service our tax dollars have built is now sold back to us as a luxury at a premium.

As an essential service, this must be reliably available to all of us, everywhere, and at a rate that isn't based on some opportunistic whim.

NATIONALIZE CANADA'S BROADBAND SERVICE NOW!

Broadband internet is becoming like gas, electricity and roads. Access to this national infrastructure is a key component of modern life. For example, to apply for universal credit, it is required to apply online. Nationalisation and free access would avoid a digital divide between areas with good provision and poor provision.

Offering free broadband would reduce business costs and household outgoings enabling higher disposable income (which critics might argue would  be used to pay higher taxes for the cost of maintaining annual internet service) The key point about nationalization is that any profit from provision would be captured by the public sector. At the moment, if companies like Rogers/Bell make profit on broadband provision the profit goes to shareholders in Rogers/Bell. Under nationalization, consumers with free internet would benefit at the expense of shareholders in internet companies.

The free element of broadband would require the government to pay the annual maintenance costs. This would be funded from taxation aimed at companies that live primarily on this service, e.g. Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy, Costco, eBay, and others - many of whom are not based here.
