Agnico Eagle Mines (AEM) has tried to amend permits to allow for a 42 km pipeline to be built between the Meliadine Mine and Itivia Harbour in Rankin Inlet. This pipeline will transport large amounts of saline effluent from the mine to Itivia to be discharged into the bay. The actions of AEM have lacked a full consultation process. AEM has argued that a full hearing on this pipeline should not be necessary. However, the Nunavut Impact Review Board has determined that a hearing will happen.
This petition is being conducted to indicate a lack of support for the above ground pipeline from the community of Rankin Inlet. By signing this petition, you are agreeing that the above ground pipeline project should not be permitted. You are concerned that the pipeline would restrict access to hunting ground for hunters and would likely impede the large caribou migration near Rankin Inlet and the Meliadine Mine. You expect AEM to be clearer in how they go about proposing major changes to their mining project and that the people of Rankin Inlet are fully informed about initiatives that could impact the community.
