Ban Plastic Shopping Bags in Canada

Plastic bags take an estimated 1000 years to decompose. However, plastic shopping bags are typically used for seconds or minutes when transferring groceries or purchased items from the store to the car or home. Some plastic bags are recycled, but most end up in landfills, and many end up as litter in our communities.
Plastic bags in the environment are harmful to nature, including whales.
It's time for Canada to adopt a program to ban plastic shopping bags, and encourage all Canadians to use reusable shopping bags or baskets instead of creating unnecessary waste each time we purchase something.
Other countries and cities around the world have already banned plastic shopping bags. Canada can show leadership by adopting a similar policy that encourages us to make conscious choices. Down the road, this will encourage other countries to implement a ban as well on plastic bags.
What are we waiting for? It's time to show leadership through our actions. Banning plastic bags is a start. Every choice counts. Plus it's 2018!
