A complete overhaul of the excessively restrictive hand mining regulations in B.C.

The hand mining rules in BC are overly restrictive and do not reflect the needs or wishes of the miners forced to adhere to them. Everyone from the weekend prospector to the claim owner with dreams of a larger operation are affected by policies and regulations that essentially hobble our ability to prospect in an efficient manner. Restrictions on camps, occupation of claims for mining purposes and types of hand mining equipment are but a few of our concerns. The line between "recreational hand panning" and "placer hand mining" only adds confusion to what should be simple. Hand mining is hand mining. A great many well established mines got their start at the grass-roots level so it is very much in the interest of the province to promote and encourage those miners just starting out. Although there are a number of associations and organizations that represent miners in the province, we feel that our voices have for the most part, gone unheard. As supporters of this petition we want to play an active role in the development of new policies and it is hoped that a constructive conversation regarding our concerns can occur and a balance can be found between our position and that of the ministry.
