Sole parents have lost their parenting payment and have been put on to unemployment payments which is a lesser amount and has harsher requirements. It is an attack on one of the most vulnerable groups in Australia and pushes them into a poverty trap. Sole parents, of whom 80% are women, are raising a large proportion of our next generation. Often they are women escaping from violent and controlling relationships. Usually they have found full time employment within two years of obtaining the parenting payment, but they need strong support in this transitional stage after separation, where their children are particularly vulnerable. This measure by the Australian Labor Government is an attack on these families and will not produce any net savings for the tax payer, who will ultimately bear the health and other social costs of the damage done.
