Maureen Deller started this petition to Kwasi Kwarteng (M.p. Trade and industry)

Supermarkets and large shops that have been allowed to stay open during lockdown, have made money, and yet they have chosen to open more and more self service tills, at the expense of ordinary tills, to make even more money at our expense!

Not only does this mean there will be job losses, (at a time when many people are out of work), but also this is bad for people who find them difficult to use. I have visual problems and can’t use them. Many older people not only find them difficult, but like the interaction they get from seeing another human beings at a service till.

Are they quicker and more efficient? Not by what I have seen. If there is only one manned till open, or in some cases, none at all, then people like me are forced to use the self service tills and ask for help. Then a big queue forms and people start complaining. Older and disabled people are made to feel unwelcome in these shops!

a balance is needed. Don’t be fooled! This is not the stores trying to help the customer by making shopping easier and quicker. It is an economic decision so they can make more money, by getting rid of staff and getting you to do the work instead!

call a halt before it is too late!
