Making Abortions Illegal

How would you feel if someone had the legal power to take away your ability to live?
Imagine not having any choice or say to whether you wanted to experience life. Well babies
don't have a say in their mother’s womb. If a mother makes the decision to abort her baby, the child can't do anything about it; their whole future is taken away from them in an instant. While some people may argue that there are legitimate reasons for abortion, I believe that they are
morally wrong. Abortion should be illegal because killing a fetus is murder, an unborn baby has the right to life, and there are alternatives.
One reason why I believe that abortions are wrong is because there are many alternate
safer solutions. In the article, Why Do More People Choose Abortion over Adoption? Kristi
Brown stated, “In the USA there are approximately two million infertile couples waiting to
adopt, many times regardless of the child's medical problems such as Down syndrome, Spina
bifida, HIV infection, or internal illness. Dr. Brad Imdler , President of Americas Pregnancy
Helpline confirms the challenge of the waiting couples by stating: “Only 1% of the annual 40,000 client’s inquiries about adoption.”Deciding to go this route instead of abortion will give the child a chance at possibly a happy life with a family who would love to raise him/her as their own. While most women who face an unplanned pregnancy think that having an abortion will be cheap, confidential, and better for them in the long run; the reality is that it is the exact opposite in most cases. Abortions aren't easy and are far from painless. Depending on your stage of pregnancy, abortions can range from hundreds to thousands of dollars. On the other hand, not only are adoptions free but there’s also a chance that you can receive living expenses from the adoptive families to help you cover pregnancy related expenses such as food, transportation, and
utilities to name a few. Many also say that abortions are the better option because you can keep
your unplanned pregnancy a secret, while that may be true adoption can also be completely
confidential. Of course, hiding a pregnancy can only last for so long, but agencies such as
American Adoptions can help by purchasing baggy clothing and even providing you with an out
of town living arrangement. I do agree that both abortion and adoption can be very hard and
emotional decisions for a mother to make. However, with abortions it is often harder to live with
the choice of terminating a pregnancy. While a woman who decides to abort, won’t be able to
even envision what her child looks like, a woman who decides to give her child up for adoption
can see her child’s face through pictures or possibly even in person. Women also have a difficult
time with coping with their abortion decision, and often will later experience postpartum
depression also known as post-abortion stress syndrome (PASS). PASS can last for several
years, sometimes longer, and can cause things like anxiety, flashbacks, depression, and
sometimes even suicidal thoughts. Again, neither adoption or abortion or easy choices, but
abortion isn’t what it’s all cracked up to be.
The basic definition of life is the existence of an individual human being or animal.
While the basic definition of murder is the unlawful premeditated killing of one human being by another. No matter how you try to spin it. No matter how good you may think your
reason is. Terminating your pregnancy is murder. When asked the question, “When does life
really begin?” there are thousands of different answers from thousands of different people in
their respected places. However, you wouldn't expect a fashion designer to know how to fix the accelerator in your vehicle, so why believe anyone outside of scientists and doctors on whether a fetus is a living thing? Pro-choice supporters (people who think abortions should be legal and is the mothers right) believe that abortions is not murder because the baby, or “ball of tissue”
as they say, doesn’t have brain waves or a heartbeat in the early stages of pregnancy. Contrary
to what many non-scientists believe, human beings are not constructed in the womb, that's
where they develop. Science tells us that the heart of the human fetus begins to form only 18
days after conception. This is only 7-10 days after a woman would expect to have her cycle.
Since the majority of women have periods that can vary, they don't discover they are pregnant
until after this point. Therefore, all abortions stop a beating heart; regardless of how early or
late the abortion takes place. Most abortions don't occur until 4-6 weeks after the fetus begins
to form. Well the human brain begins to form on day 23 and is formed enough to produce brain waves by week 6, which means that most abortions also destroy a functioning brain. Ann Furedi, the chief executive of the lather independent abortion provider in the
U.K., said this in 2008 debate: “We can accept that the embryo is a living thing in the fact that it has a beating heart, that it has its own genetic system within it. It's clearly human in the sense
that it's not a gerbil, and we can recognize that it is human life...the point is not when does
human life begin, but when does it really begin to matter?”.
I'm a true believer in equality. That no matter your skin color, ethnicity, age, religious background or nationality that we are all created equal. We should all be entitled to the same
rights. I feel the same for unborn children. For many who are in favor of legal abortion, a
zygote, an embryo, and a fetus are potential human beings, but not actual human beings. This
is however an invalid point because from the moment of fertilization, the egg has his or her own unique DNA, different from any other person on the planet. A human being is defined as, “any individual of the genus Homo, especially a member of the species Homo sapiens; a person, especially as distinguished from other animals or as representing the human species.” There
isn't a definition of “human being” that excludes an unborn. A common pro-choice argument in response to this fact is that, while the fetus is a human being, he/she is not legally a person and therefore is not entitled to the same rights that you and I are- mainly the right to life. This is
something we've heard before, just in a different scenario. Walter B. Hoye wrote, “Slaves were considered property, not people, and were treated as such. The killing of slaves was almost
never regarded to as murder.” Just how they were wrong then, they are wrong now. But until
our government recognizes them as people, there won't be a stop to legal abortion.
The 14th amendment was designed to protect classes of people like the unborn. At the time the 14th amendment was adopted, abortion was already illegal or being made illegal
through the nation. Since abortions were widely thought of as a criminal act in the 1860’s, by
1900 it was considered a felony in every state. Because of this, there was no reason for
congress to specifically discuss the unborn in the debate regarding the 14th amendment since
the unborn were already a protected class.
