This may come as a surprise to many of my friends and some of my family, but I have been living with HIV/AIDS since around 1996 the doctors guess. I was actually diagnosed in 2006. In 2010 I was placed on Social Security Disability. This is something I haven't really made public until today. I didn't and still don't want people to treat me differently although I know some will. My immediate family and spouse are all aware of my illness and they have been wonderful and I am blessed to have them in my life. If you have never had an HIV test I encourage you to get one. When you go to the doctor or hospital they do not automatically test you for HIV you have to request the test. It took about 10 years before I collapsed and was in the ICU that the doctors suggested that I might have HIV and recommended I get tested. I was in Washington state, along way from my home in Texas. When I was first told, I thought I had been given a death sentence. Well I have since learned that I was wrong and with the medication I now have an undetectable viral load. I have to thank Ms. Diana Turner my PA at the Dallas VA Hospital and all the members of the Infectious Disease department for doing what they do. I will use a line from Hillary to answer the question of how I got HIV/AIDS, "What does it matter, now?" The fact is I have it and by signing this petition hopefully others won't have to go through the difficulties of what many have gone through and a cure will be found in the near future. #Freedom2020 #Freedom4All #AIDS2016

HIV in the United States disproportionately affects the most marginalized and vulnerable members of our society. Just because they are less visible doesn't mean they deserve less help.
