Education and access to post-secondary education have been a treaty right guaranteed to Indigenous people in Canada since the Royal Proclamation of 1763, followed by its re-affirmation as a constitutional right in the Canadian Constitution Act of 1982. However, decades of low-academic attainment rates for Indigenous populations have led to a persistent education gap between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous students in the Canadian education system. The severe neglect towards fixing the education gap by the federal and provincial governments is an issue that must be formally addressed immediately with proper action taken.

Action needs to be taken and this can be done by the education system implementing mandatory Indigenous culture within their elementary and secondary education curriculum. With adequate teacher training, and Indigenous people teaching their own people about specific languages and cultures, this can be a step closer to accomplishing our goal. Furthermore, the education system and organizations need to acknowledge the variations in groups within the Indigenous people. Lastly, Indigenous people having full control over what they teach and giving them the authority to education allows and ensures that the euro-centric views will be removed.
