Let me start by informing you on a huge , shocking statistic. Suicide is the leading cause of death among young people aged 18-34 years in the UK and it is considerably higher in men, with around three times as many men dying as a result of suicide compared to women. To me , this is so upsetting and something needs to be done for people now and for future generations. Over the years , the numbers of people taking their own lives have almost doubled. In 2017 , 5821 people committed suicide while in 2018 this number rose by nearly 50% . I’ll save you the maths and let you take in the huge increase which brings 2018s total roughly to 11500 people. I saw a post online where a mental health meeting was held in parliament (specifically for young people) and from my recollection, less than 10 people turned up. There are hundreds of seats in parliament and when unimportant things like Brexit are topic of conversation , all these seats are filled. This is hugely concerning and us as the general public need to speak up. No one has ever fought for what we currently wish to, so we need every single signature we can get to really make that difference.

I recently came across a girl called Sarah on twitter , who shared photos of her and her partner Luke , who sadly took his life - he was 19. Her post gained tens of thousands of likes and she used this publicity to make a group chat for people around the UK , to share their stories of suicides in their partners. I , along with 36 other people were added and we’ve come to realise that we shouldn’t have to go through what we have been through. Sarah and I are the youngest in the chat being 18 and we shouldn’t have to deal with what we currently are at such a young age. This only makes me worry how many others are dealing with such heartbreak who are significantly younger than I. In this group chat, we’ve shared memories, photos and videos of our angels’ but we have also shared our anguish towards the government and our unexplained questions which are , why is nothing being done ? Our group has decided to make this petition to really make a difference and use the power of social media as a voice , and spread what we believe in.

We have decided that our aim is to make a law which we will call ‘angels law’ where it should be made illegal to post online / on websites how to take your own life. We have done huge amounts of research , and we know that if this law was in place it could hugely reduce the statistics for future generations and for your future children / grandchildren. When typing into google ‘how to end my life’ , hundreds of results appear where individuals can learn and be instructed on how to complete a suicide attempt. Results will say ‘this is for educational purposes, please seek help if you are wishing to die’ but realistically who needs to know how to shorten their lives for ‘educational purposes’. Children shouldn’t know what suicide is let alone how to carry it out. These websites include step by step instructions on how to tie a knot to hang yourself, information on how many pills one would need to have a fatal overdose and it isn’t needed online. If we can put something in place to make this illegal , as well as remove the websites, we will use all the fight in us to do so.  We have taken into account criticisms of our aim and know we wouldn’t be able to completely stop suicide, but knowing we could truly make a difference with the numbers I explained to you at the start , it’s time we start acting on it.

Always check on your loved ones and never stop asking if they are okay.

Im asking you, whoever you are , whatever your story , speak up and sign this petition. We will fight until we are up somewhere of high significance, speaking to someone of huge superiority and we will complete this together.

For our angels , Peter , Luke , Nathan , Mark , Patrick , Cameron , Lucas , Luke , Rick , Kathleen , Curtis , Lawrence , Rob  ❤️
