Why this petition matters

Among our thirty human rights are:

-"Freedom of thought and religion
Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this
right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either
alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his
religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance"

-"Freedom of opinion and expression
Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right
includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive
and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of
frontiers."

And yet it is so often these basic human rights are violated by the very people who are meant to protect them. Such is the unfortunate case of Aneesh Jasy, who was removed from his home and had his mobile device confiscated by the authorities under false pretences and was then placed behind bars. The reason? Aneesh had posted sacrilegious memes on a low-profile Twitter account.

He did not entice violence nor spark an uproar within his community. He simply utilised his rights to free speech in his space and was consequently removed from his home under dishonest pretences, leaving behind a family that anxiously awaits his return.

The arrest took place in Coimbatore, India where, in 2017,  H Farooq was hacked to death as he went about his day similarly for simply voicing his beliefs and criticising mainstream ideas. Now, Aneesh's life is in danger too.

It is our duty to apply pressure on the Indian government and force them to acknowledge the blatant breach of human rights taking place and return Aneesh to the safety of his own home. He is not a criminal. He is a father and a husband and he is greatly missed.
