Extending University Deadlines
Extending University Deadlines
As a university student, I know first hand how hard it is during this pandemic. Not only are we being left in the dark with lockdown rules, we are still expected to reach deadlines that in reverse we know our lecturers will not be able to reach. An extension of deadlines for assignments is important not only for the quality of the work but for the mental wellbeing of each student. Many are suffering and nothing is being said about it, the stress that is expected whilst at university is being increased due to the lack of support from lecturers, from being left in the lurch and getting no feedback or response to emails being sent, as well as being expected to reach deadlines. Expected to produce the same standard of work even though circumstances have changed and the level of teaching is nowhere near the same standard it would be if it was in person, is not fair for university students.
Recently exams have been cancelled for GCSEs and Alevels but nothing is being said for university students, how is this fair? Most universities refused to let people defer the year when this pandemic started even though, by the end of this new lockdown we'll have been online a year. Many individuals had to choose between dropping out, put up with it and not say a word whilst having to watch online lectures where the standard is not the same as face to face.
University students are expected to write thousands of words for assignments when we haven't been in since before the first lockdown, whereas GCSEs and Alevels have now been cancelled months in advance. A chance to extend our deadlines is all we are wanting, the chance to actually be able to achieve a grade to our fullest. Please imagine how you would feel as a student being forced out of face to face learning, thrown online and expected to produce the same quality of work and exams with 0 guidance.
The least that can be done if the £9k+ for the year is not being reduced is to have our deadlines extended.
