Domestic Abuse and unmarried person's rights
Domestic Abuse and unmarried person's rights
Why this petition matters

So many relationships are ending and one party having to flee due to Domestic abuse.
After a 12 year relationship and trying to leave over 30 times in 4 years, I lost everything, my own belongings and everything I had paid for. I was homeless with 2 young children for 5 months.
I was engaged to the perpetrator for 11 years and was financially, verbally, emotionally, mentally and physically abused. I was given back from the house what he said I could have, which was broken and destroyed. Little did I know until I left nearly two years ago, there is no law in place to protect victims of Domestic abuse and retrieving their own personal property back including the children's belongings. The Family Courts aren't interested in belongings.
I paid £450 to get advice from a barrister and was told not to take my ex partner to Court because if I lost I would need to pay his fees. Which meant that the thousands of pounds I had to hand over and the goods I bought for the family home, I'm unable to get back or the value of.
So after fleeing Domestic abuse, we continue to be penalised further by not being able to sort out property, because the mortgage was in my ex partners name, then it looks like everything belongs to him, but this was just one sign of controlling behaviour.
As victims, we need an unmarried person's rights law re established, so that we are entitled to our personal belongings and a law that stands for criminal damage to other persons property, should a perpetrator destroy our belongings and the Police act upon it and charge.
Please help to fight for an unmarried person's rights law, so many lives are destroyed by Domestic abuse and violence.
