Bashir Keshtiar started this petition to Government

Kabul International Airport presently called as Hamed Karzai International Airport is located 16km away from Kabul, the capital city of Afghanistan. It is the primary airport in the country. The airport is a hub for many Afghan airlines. The airport was originally built in 1960 by former Soviet Union engineers. Foreign tourists began visiting Afghanistan via Kabul Airport which ended after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979.

The airport was renamed in October 2014 after the former Afghan President Hamed Karzai. This name change as it was done without any consultation and against the wish of many Afghans led to a major opposition. Now there are several lobby groups in and outside Afghanistan demanding to rename the airport back to its original historic name. Kabul International Airport is an iconic place and also enlisted as national heritage, therefore,  the original name should not have been changed at first place. It is timely to protest against the change and call on President’s intervention to issue a decree to rename the airport.

This name change has been done against the wish of Afghanistan people specially those who have lived in Kabul in the past and those who are currently living there. Please join us on us campaign to raise our voice ensuring it reaches to Afghanistan’s high ranking government officials who have the executive power over this demand. This petition is not against President Karzai,  it rather is a protest against the name change of Kabul Airport from its original name to its current name as Hamed Karzai’s International Airport.
