Liz West started this petition to Government

This petition has been started to hopefully address 3 issues

1) Accessibility for voting in elections to raise 'turnout'

2) The staffing / running costs of  an election

3) The greener issues around the election in the use of paper and use of vehicles by voters

Background

I personally missed voting in 2 general elections before I decided to change to postal vote. On the first I ended up in hospital giving birth to my second daughter , on the second I had to go to London with work leaving before 7am and not getting back that night.  With a winter General Election now set who knows on the day what the weather will be like and, if poor, how that will affect the turnout?

In addition the turnout at elections in the UK continues to fall whether due to apathy or accessibility so improving the system to encourage a greater number of people to vote must be a positive thing. At the moment you either apply for a postal vote (which is great if you know in advance you can't make it or just want to vote that way anyway) or you have to walk / drive to a polling station - present your voting card and if you live in England, Wales or Scotland you do not need to bring any identification to vote! These voting boxes are then all collected and taken to counting centres where numerous people are paid to count the votes .

Proposal

My proposal is that there are 3 ways to vote - 1) postal  2) at a poling station as now plus 3) an online option. The online option would work similarly to how you currently update the electoral register now in that you receive a form and enter your vote using the codes on the form - it could be further improved if when you register for an online vote you also supply an email address so your codes are sent there rather than by mail thus cutting paper use and postage costs.

Benefits

1) increase in number of people able to vote (in particular this should help disabled people who may struggle to get to polling stations)

2)  decrease in number of people driving to polling stations cutting their carbon footprint

3) Decrease in number of staff required to count paper votes

4) Quicker declarations as less paper votes to count

I know this solution will not be perfect but hopefully the gist is there and I hope people support it
