Through the years, the world has certainly undergone evident changes and it will continue to change in the future. With that being said, construction is one of humanity's first to develop through the help of technology. The construction industry is a factor of where and how almost everyone lives, operates and plays in order to provide and sustain one’s housing and facilities. It also plays an important role in the economic sector's growth and progress as well as in one nation's development. However, as the construction industry flourishes over time that leads to the growth of society, it is not an environmental friendly activity if the industry's progress and development are not well planned and prepared. Due to the advancement in technology, the construction industry has reached its peak, affecting the environment which leads to deforestation, pollution and climate change.

The primary objective of the construction industry is to enhance the quality of life of each person and buildings are intended to have a reduced effect on the environment throughout their lifetime, while offering people with a standard level of comfort, durability and functionality. The sustainable buildings are developed to minimize water, raw materials, power and land use. It also decreases environmental emissions, waste and pollution and protects one's health. However, the construction industry has built-in negative impacts on the environment. It is not an environmentally friendly process by nature because it destroys the environment. Shen (2002), explained that construction industry is not by nature an environmentally friendly activity and it is a major contributor to environmental impacts, which are typically classified as air pollution, noise pollution and water pollution. While according to Tam et al., (2006), construction industry is one of the biggest generators of pollution in Hong Kong and becoming a critical issue.

Gray, expounded that the construction industry is a major source of water pollution that kills number of aquatic animals in Malaysia. Also, the construction industry results in the release of carbon dioxide, methane, and other waste products that pollute the atmosphere and are thought to contribute to global climate change. Due to this, to diminish the impact of construction to the environment, green building should be considered. Green building is the practice of constructing structures and using procedures that are environmentally accountable and resource-efficient throughout the life cycle of a building from sitting to design, construction, operation, maintenance, refurbishment and deconstruction. They are intended to fulfill certain goals, such as defending occupant health, enhancing worker productivity, making more efficient use of energy, water and other resources and decreasing general environmental impacts. Green building is something that everyone should really jump on to because for the sake of the future and the generation to come, we must take good care of our environment because it is our only home. So, let’s work hand in hand together because even our simple actions can make a difference and can effectively foster a better planet earth and a better place for all of us humans, plants and wildlife to live in.
