An Online Petition For Academic Freeze
An Online Petition For Academic Freeze
For the past 8 months, we have been facing a pandemic because of Covid 19 virus. We have to live according to New Normal life, wherein wearing a face mask, social distancing and no physical gathering is a must. Even though we are experiencing a lot we have to move forward. For this school, Online type of learning was implemented wherein all the discussions of the instructor to student will be delivered virtually. It may easy as it sounds but it's not. Students are not the same. Not everybody have the means to adopt to the new normal type of schooling. They have different levels of learning skills. Some are fast and others are slow. For those students who are slow learner they need a more detailed discussion for them to comprehend to their lesson. Even before they are having face to face classes they still having a hard time, what more right now. Also, many students did not enroll for this school year even though they want. Lack of financial means to buy gadgets for their online classes, and having a internet connection. During this pandemic, many people lost their job, including some parents. They are obliged to buy gadgets instead of using that amount for their needs at this time. Academic freeze because no student should be left behind. This is not just for ourselves but also to those teachers and students who are struggling now. It may not be a best solution, but it can be adopted once the government resolves mass testing and if they plan on how to make flexible academic terms and reduce tuition and other fees usually projected for the use of school facilities.
The purpose of our petition is to have an Academic Freeze.
Mental Health Crisis is one of the reasons why our project should be supported. Students are among the most vulnerable population to mental health issues. Young people are still developing, and social interaction is an essential component of their well-being. Due to the sudden isolation, a new survey says that sixty percent of college students are experiencing depression. Clearly, this is not the best time for academic burdens. There are also many students who don’t find their homes particularly conducive to learning. Not everyone has the privilege to have a separate, personal room from the rest of the family. Academic requirements can take its toll on the mental health of young people, especially those who are also struggling financially. Therefore, mental health must also be one of the aspects that the Department of Education should look into.
Our group aims to create a petition on Change.org, facebook group and blog to achieve our goals. We will also be creating infographics and other related information about our petition.
By supporting the project that we are working on must need the Governor's Permission. Furthermore, we must need to collect data for those people who are willing to have an Academic Freeze. Our country is suffering with two major problems; the Covid-19 and the typhoon Ulysses. However, the project focuses on "Bagyong Ulysses" wherein many areas have been affected which resulted in many deaths and sufferings of people and animals. We must have an Academic Freeze, because students prioritize their modules despite the situation they are in. There are also reports where students died especially in the affected areas for the reason that they came back to their houses to get the materials they need to have their modules and online classes be done. Some areas have no electricity and are being soaked in flood, that's why it is hard to deal with and continue doing our school work.
If we were to be asked, there is nothing wrong if we stop or will graduate late because the situation right now is understandable, and it has a vast impact in our daily lives, in our mental and emotional health, and it is no longer healthy. We are asking all of you to hear our plead regarding the Academic Freeze, it is not just for us, students, but also for our teachers and parents.
