As a young African-American girl living during this time and watching everything unfold at home as I watch the news daily, and see how COVID-19 is affecting African-Americans and Hispanics substantially. It causes me think about my own family, I have parents in the medical field, grandparents that in Detroit which is one of the hot spots for this pandemic, and other family members all over the country. Never have I imagined that someone in my family would contract the virus, and recently my grandfather did. Thankfully he's not on a ventilator, but everyday I am thankful that he's still alive. I know what it's now like to have a family member to have the virus, and all of the thoughts and emotions that are constantly all over the place. Therefore, that's why I want to start a petition in order to encourage our government to move forward with contact tracing, because this is the best strategy that we can do in order to prevent more African-Americans, Hispanics and other minorities from dying. Our government knows that African-Americans and Hispanics are making up majority of the COVID-19 deaths in states, and they have been stating that something needs to be done in order to protect these communities. That something is contact tracing! By instilling contact tracing primarily for minorities, we can put life saving provisions into place. For example, providing the data that's collected from minority individuals and families to then forward to organizations, helps organizations so that they know exactly where supplies are needed the most. Another example, could be state governors not allowing people to enter a city that mainly has minorities in order to protect them if they have to go out. Contact tracing can change the outcome for all minorities that are at risk during these times. But in order to do this we need the government to move forward with contact tracing, and our state governors need to be adamant about enforcing rules once contact tracing can be used in states, because as of right now this is the best way to protect minority groups. We can stop COVID-19 from taking the lives of more innocent minorities, but we all need to be in agreement in order for this to work. So please join me in my petition to further develop the use of contact tracing in our country, minorities are counting on you, I'm counting on you. (NOTE: The picture up above is of some of my family, and it was taken long before the pandemic began.)
