Defend the autonomy of our student unions’ - University of Toronto

We, the undersigned call on members of Governing Council to reject the recommendation made by the University administration to adopt the proposed “Policy on Open, Accessible and Democratic Autonomous Student Organizations at its next meeting on Thursday, June 23rd 2016.

The policy is not democratic and is a threat to the autonomy of our students’ Union.

Our Student Union autonomy is important to us. The proposed policy challenges the fundamental independence that many students have fought for and what our society expects from a loyal advocate of student’s interests, which in many cases has been in contradiction to the decisions made by the Governing Council.

We also call on all members of Governing Council to respect the autonomy of our student union’s by supporting provincial or federal legislation that will protect the autonomy of our student unions.
