Patrick Furze started this petition to Governer- General

When Castlemaine resident Jane Goodrich was turfed from the 3rd round of the 2018 Castlemaine Library spelling bee, a grave injustice occurred. Since then there's been a growing community campaign (mainly just Jane) to have her name added to the official winner's board. Last Friday, ABC Central Victoria interviewed Jane about the incident.  You can listen to it Here (2:55)

When asked to spell the word Lasagne, Jane chose to spell is with three As. Though not the traditional spelling of the word, Lasagne is commonly spelled Lasagna in Australia. Not only does the Australian Macquarie Dictionary list ‘lasagna’ as an alternative spelling, but also dictionary.com, the online Oxford dictionary, the Merriam Webster dictionary and the Cambridge dictionary. Australia's biggest pasta manufacturer, San Remo, spells it with a trio of As. So does some American tourists in Venice.

In the days following the incident, Jane wrote an open letter to the Castlemaine Library and protested the result. As a result, Italian foods are no longer included in the annual spelling bee. Spelling bee organiser, Adam Ford, also wrote to San Remo and suggested a spelling change.

Should all San Remo sheeted pasta be recalled? Or should Jane be recognised as the joint winner of the 2018 bee? Only a royal commission can get to the bottom of this. It's time for the Governor-General to step in.
