Whenever we drive along any motorway in the UK, we have become used to the idea that if we should experience a sudden attack of illness, a mechanical problem, or even run out of petrol, if we can just coast into the hard shoulder, we can reach relative safety. After that, it's advisable to get out of the vehicle via the nearside and get a decent distance away from the motorway traffic.

"Smart Motorways " should be even safer than this, right?

It's a great idea to use the lanes more efficiently but are you aware that the "smart" approach involves doing away with the hard shoulder altogether?  If this relatively safe haven is removed, any drivers who are forced to stop on the motorway are at great risk of having a high-speed vehicle plough into theirs. Even if they are safely at a distance, the risk to other motorway users is enormous. Too many lives have been lost in this way (ref: https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/world/2021/jan/19/what-are-smart-motorways-and-are-they-safe  Imagine abandoning your car and retreating to a safe distance, only to see another driver lose their life as they collide with your stationart car at high speed. It doesn't bear think about - yet it has happened.

The changes involved in creating "smart motorways" may improve safety in many ways - but we believe that the safety feature of a hard shoulder is something that must not be taken from us.
