As a chronic pain patient I have experienced this. My gp refused all her patients, many patients, due to a letter from the govt designed to cause fear in GP's. The real crisis is the people committing suicide because they have chronic pain, lived comfortably and with dignity and then cut off abruptly. These arent junkies. These are normal people, mums, dads. Tax paying, working people that would work and be mums and dads because they had access to pain medication that helped. It is a basic human right to have access to appropriate pain medication at appropriate doses, to live comfortably. You, the govt (the health minister) have taken away the dignity of these normal everyday people, and their ability to live their lives out of bed and contributinf to society. Stop the panic. Publish real statistics. Allow everyday people to be able to manage their own pain management, to have input and work with their doctors, to know the risks of any medication and make that decision themselves with their family doctor. Stop treating all chronic pain patients as junkies looking for their next high. These people need their medication back!

I suffer chronic disabling pain conditions and have to rely on prescribed opioids to get out of bed, let alone try to walk. Reports of an 'opioid crisis/epidemic' have not only been over-estimated - with ILLEGAL opiate use accounting for at least half the numbers the US estimated, for example(!), but are no excuse for denying those with chronic pain conditions prescribed opioids, especially when other drugs and modalities have been tried and failed to help. The Australian government and the AMA need to step back and enable doctors and pain specialists to be free to treat those with chronic pain with opioids and do so on an individual case-by-case basis. The current situation where the government and medical associations are causing doctors to deny opioids to chronic pain sufferers is not only deplorable but it is a violation of a doctor's legal duty of care and is leading to breakdowns and suicides. The situation must be rectified immediately to save lives and restore what little quality of life a sufferer of chronic pain has!
