Change the start time of middle school and high school to after 8:00 am
The start time of 7:30 am is too early for teenagers, and we should move the start time of school to 8:30, as as recommended by the U.S. Surgeon General, the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Medical Association, and the Centers for Disease Control.
Here in Oregon, with start times being around 7:30 AM for high schools and some middle schools, teenagers are going to school in the dark, waiting at bus stops in the dark. This is dangerous.
The teen brain operates differently that a younger child's. Hormones and circadian rhythm change, making it impossible for most teen to get enough sleep if having to wake up early.
Studies have shown that when teens get enough sleep there is less caffeine, drug, and alcohol use. There are less depression symptoms, less tardiness, fewer absences, less suspensions, and lower car crash rates for teens when school start time is later. Teens pay more attention in class, get better grades, have better test scores, have better graduation rates, and have better cognitive functioning. (from startschoollater.net)
Not getting enough sleep affects teens mental health and immune system. The issues caused by teens not getting enough sleep in all likelihood cost as much if not more that what the state of Oregon saves by having school start early. Please follow what is recommended by the top medical professionals and change the start time for middle and high school to 8:30 or later.
