As a healthcare provider who provides care to elderly patients that reside in assisted living and long term care facilities, I have witnessed first hand the negative impacts of the COVID restrictions on this population and their loved ones.  Understandably there has been a need to protect our elderly population from the devastating effects of the COVID virus, which was the intention of  putting these restrictions in place. However, the resulting isolation has contributed to major declines in the mental, physical and emotional health of these patients.

Many elderly patients who were previously vibrant, independent, cognitively intact, and in a good overall state of health have developed major depression, anxiety, physical deconditioning leading to recurrent falls and decline in mobility, and worsening cognitive impairment as a result of being isolated from their families and loved ones.  The families of these patients have also been left feeling helpless and devastated by the decline they have seen in their loved ones, not being able to see them and provide them with the companionship and comfort they need during these challenging times.

Now that nearly all of these facilities have had their residents fully vaccinated, and the numbers of cases and hospitalizations are continuing to decline with increased numbers of people vaccinated, it is time for these restrictions to be eased. We have seen restrictions eased in places likes bars, venues, etc., however why are we still not allowing these elderly to be able to have physical contact with their loved ones in the equivalent of their home? What is the rationale as to why we cannot let family members in to see their elderly loved ones, while still adhering to safe practices, such as having them wear masks, screening them prior to entering, having them try to maintain appropriate distance? The simple answer is, there really isn’t a good, logical reason.

Please help me in supporting this cause to allow our elderly to be able to have the companionship of their loved ones, and thus to give them back their quality of life. And also, for families and individuals important to the elderly to be afforded the simple right to be able to be present with their loved one.  This NEEDS to change.
