There are serious and harmful delays in the processing of needy eligibile users of food stamps in North Carolina.
Thousands of the elderly, children and the working poor of North Carolina are going weeks and months without the distribution of food stamps they are qualified for. Local news stories report that the problems are because of glitches of a new statewide computer program called NC Fast. Yet these "glitches" have persisted for months creating an emergency situation in many of these households.
I personally have been supporting a close elderly neighbor who applied for recertification of her food stamps and she has not received any response for 3 months. I am no longer able to support her due to a reduction of my own salary. She has not received any distribution of her food stamps during this 3 month time. And she has been getting by with the assistance of others. We have contacted the Guilford County DSS, only to receive voicemails from every number we try...including supervisors. No one ever returns calls as they say on their voicemails.
But this is just not a local problem. Issues have been reported all over the state. The food banks are closing or going low on food due to high demand. And this is a epidemic that has affected all areas of North Carolina. More information can be found from the following local news story:
It is a travesty that needy children, adults and the elderly must go hungry for months due to a computer glitch.
Please make more resources available to provide assistance to the needy who have had delays in the processing of their food stamp eligibility.
