Petition Closed

Free access to parking lots and turnouts along Highway 1 provide access to public beaches along the Sonoma Coast. This is important to local businesses, beach combers, surfers, tourists, fishermen and women, divers, families of modest means, city dwellers, locals, bird watchers, photographers, anyone who wants relief from the day to day pressures of life. Being made to pay to walk at the beach is just plain wrong. In 1976 Proposition 20 made it clear in the California State Constitution that the beach is public. For the State to now start closing the door on free access to the beach is unthinkable and indefensible. Free public access to the beach is a core right of the public and must not be eroded. People should not be forced to pay the State to use what is rightfully theirs.
