Dear Reader,

As you may know--on March 25, 2021, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp signed SB202--a partisan law further justifying GOP voter suppression concerns that American activists have grown suspect on since our latest gubernatorial election.

This law imposes unnecessary voting requirements such as:

  •  IDs being needed for absentee voting ("persons or entities that mail absentee ballot applications shall mail such applications only to eligible registered electors" (Legiscan))
  • Water not being allowed in voting lines ("nor shall any person give, offer to give,
or participate in the giving of any money or gifts, including, but not limited to, food and drink, to an elector" (Section 33))

The law also limits the use of drop boxes and allows elected officials to take over election boards. In addition, this law is believed to most-so hurt the minority vote, whose high turnout boosted the Peach State to flip Democratic for the first time in 28 years in the most recent presidential election.

I, for one, believe that this law is a violation of American democracy. Election results--be it of one of the states or the entire nation--should be decided by its people, not its elected officials. Voting is how we as a nation choose people who will better represent us, who will provide us with the most rights and care no matter who we are. SB202 is indeed a major barrier to this American right.

Another reason why I see SB202 as a big problem is because of how severely it bastardizes the Peach State's image. It sets Georgia law back to the early 20th century when one would've been disenfranchised in the state they were a minority and/or poor. To boot, corporations and celebrities are not going to tolerate a law like this, whether Georgia is blue or red. Sporting events and films have already pulled out of Georgia--things like tourist events and concerts may be next. This sort of boycotting will starve the Peach State and its hardworking people of money, tourism, and industry; possibly stagnate Georgia's rapid population growth, and make Georgia be seen as the most fascist state on the Eastern Seaboard. Georgia is my home and favorite state, and I don't want such a thing to happen.

However, if SB202 gets repealed, all Georgians can rest assured knowing that they'll be able to vote, regardless of their background, without restrictions. In addition, statewide industry and tourism will be able to thrive again in a state that no longer champions voter suppression; and Georgia can go back to being one of America's favorite states instead of one of its most despised.

I am asking you to sign this petition for the sake of Georgia--for both its reputation and, much more importantly, the hardworking folks who live here. SB202 is indeed a feudal law, but we the people have the power to convince Governor Kemp to overturn it, so all Georgians can have the inalienable right to cast their ballots. Thank You.
