Gov. Bentley: Don't Opt Out of Healthcare for Alabamians

Over half of Americans who receive Medicaid, including thousands right here in Alabama, have a history of cardiovascular disease or stroke. Increasing access to health care coverage for those individuals in Alabama with chronic illness can be the difference between life and death.

Right now the State of Alabama has an opportunity to provide increased coverage, through expansion of Medicaid, to an estimated 300,000 Alabamians in need of care. However, Alabama along with several other states has chosen to opt out. Although the Alabama Legislature passed and Governor Bentley will soon sign Medicaid reform legislation to improve care, the Governor remains opposed to the expansion.

Increased coverage is the gateway to improving public health and reducing the chronic disease burden in Alabama. We have an obligation to help make sure no Alabama senior or child goes without healthcare.

Letter to
Alabama Governor
As an advocate for improving health care in Alabama, I fully support increasing access to health care coverage in Alabama through Medicaid expansion.

Over half of Americans who receive Medicaid, including thousands right here in Alabama, have a history of cardiovascular disease or stroke. Increasing access to health care coverage for those individuals in Alabama with chronic illness can be the difference between life and death.

It makes good health sense. Those with Medicaid coverage are more likely to have their blood pressure controlled and 20 percent more likely to have been checked for high cholesterol, compared to the uninsured.

It makes good economic sense. A University of Alabama at Birmingham study published in 2012 stated that expansion would not only provide coverage to an additional 300,000 people in need of care, but also add nearly $2 billion in tax revenue to Alabama coffers from 2014 to 2020.

Widespread discussions in our state over the need for Medicaid reform has led to the adoption of legislation to do just that. Now that this critical step has been taken, the American Heart Association and its volunteer partners urge the State of Alabama to take full advantage of the federal funds available to provide thousands of Alabama families with the lifesaving health coverage they need through the Medicaid program and help make Alabama healthier.
