Recreational Boaters are dismayed at the decision of Gov. Cuomo  regarding closing NYS Boat Marinas to Boat Owners for overnight stays.

As it currently stands, boat owners who rent slips for their boats in NYS run marinas cannot stay overnight on their own boat. This is not in effect for privately owned marinas. Private marina owners decide if the boat owners can stay overnight on boats.

The ruling to not allow overnight stays will effect many boat owners. Several boat owners are not local and travel hours to enjoy the beautiful lakes in NYS. Some owners live on their boats for the summer, and need to make arrangements now. As it stands today NYS has not made any adjustment in the cancellation policy. Boaters have until May 15th, 2020 to get a full refund. Quite a few boaters are considering cancelling slip rentals at NYS Marinas. This will further hinder revenue for an already weak economy in NYS. Furthermore, it will take away revenue for local businesses as well (ie: gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants, wineries etc).

Boater owners should be allowed to enjoy time on the water. To savor fresh air with people who they live with or by themselves. Those who chose to stay on their own private boats should be allowed to do so.  While it may make sense to limit certain venues and places that attract massive amounts of people to minimize the potential spread of the Coronavirus it is not reasonable to take away access to private boats. Many of these people have heavily invested resources for these activities including state mandated permits, fees, registrations, licenses and such. This  closure is not in line with other measures put in place to flatten the curve.
