Peejo and Kay (and Lucy) were the reason we fell in love with Goucher! They were both instrumental in helping our child adjust safely and successfully to college.
I am an alumna (class of 1989) a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and I work at an ivy-level university as a campus counselor. Research and my own experience tell us that services such as ACE demonstrably make a difference in the lives of students. These kinds of services make a significant difference to students managing difficult transitions to the academic aspects of college life, help level the playing field for students who have not had the same academic advantages of some of their peers, and adds a specialized set of skills that counselors and academic advising professionals are not trained in. Eliminating Goucher's ACE program is counter to the values Goucher has established of a diverse and egalitarian student body. Eliminate ACE and you will eliminate a significant program that contributes to Goucher's academic excellence, and will place a stumbling block in front of students who could otherwise thrive.
I am heartsick to hear this news. My son was a 2018 graduate. As a parent of an out of state student, college athlete and a student who needed testing accommodations I would have been nervous being so far away - ACE was our lifeline, support, and an incredible asset to our son and our family. They supported him daily and helped him grow and navigate his college experience. Nancy was there when we had to call to let him know his Grandmother had passed and to know that someone was waiting for him to help him handle his grief was an incredible blessing to our family. This staff and Lucy are not just staff - they are family they care for our kids and to lay off Peejo, Kay and to lose Lucy is a HUGE DETRIMENT to Goucher! Who is making these decisions?? You don’t need to restructure something that is needed and working! I am deeply disappointed in the direction that Goucher is going - you have stopped listening. I am saddened by these changes. The ladies and Lucy need to be reinstated they are invaluable. You are losing the most important part of why our son chose Goucher - the personal caring aspect. Whoever made this decision made a very poor decision.
I've found ACE to be a lifesaver for my son far beyond just the organizing of his classes. It is one way that Goucher College sets themselves apart in having a wide selection of students and being open to helping them all.
ACE is one of the most important resources that Goucher offers. It would be entirely remiss to terminate some of the most caring, passionate, resourceful, and valuable people on Goucher's campus. The programming that ACE provides could not be replaced, and would severely impact the academic and personal success of Goucher students.
