Many of us buy coffee/tea to get through our long days studying at campus. Many of us will buy our food from the school cafeteria. Many of us will end up having a table full of discarded single use items. Simply put: trash.
Chalmers University of Technology and Gothenburg University should take responsibility and make demands for campus restaurants and cafeterias to stop selling single use items. No more single use items would mean less waste, reduced carbon foot-print and a more sustainable university.
This is by no means impossible. Other universities around the world have been reducing or even scrapping single use items at their campuses. For example, studierendenWERK which caters to universities in Berlin started to work against the 'ToGo'-trend years ago. The results have been impressive, with 70% of all hot beverages being bought in paper mugs in 2012, compared to only 9% in 2018. Even more impressive is that they will completely stop selling papers mugs from the 1st of January 2019.
We should follow suit! If Chalmers University of Technology and Gothenburg University want to take sustainable development seriously then single use items must become a thing of the past.
