Abby M. started this petition to Goshen Central School District

On October 29th, 2020, Goshen Central School District in New York announced they would move from giving traditional snow days and instead opt for virtual learning on days of inclement weather in the 2020-21 school year. This change does not seem healthy for our students, especially after all that has already happened in 2020. COVID-19 and its effects have arguably changed everything about our lives as we know them. For those of us in school, these changes are much tougher to navigate. Sports and clubs are slowly restarting after an eternity without them, and there is still the possibility of cancellations. We can no longer sit with friends and just talk without worrying about keeping distance and staying safe. Many of us are dealing with the stress of parents who are unemployed, and/or family members who are compromised and vulnerable to COVID-19, and unfortunately, many of us have lost family or friends to this virus. The list of ways we've been affected continues to grow. Online learning is difficult for students, parents, and our teachers. We were thrust into a stressful and unpredictable situation without any control of where our lives would go.

So why is Goshen Central taking away a simple joy like snow days?

Our students- AND our teachers- have been through a lot these past few months. Snow days are one of the exciting things we had to look forward to this year. Everything as we know it has changed- why are we changing something that gives joy? Snow days give us a mental breather, a day to just enjoy ourselves. There's excitement in snow days, the tradition and anticipation of waiting, even websites dedicated to predicting snow days. This year especially, we need to be going outside and getting active, playing in the snow, having some fun, or just sleeping in and getting some rest, not being stuck inside staring at a screen while our teachers attempt to engage us. Hudson Valley's Ben Noll has even has had a page for snow day predictions in our area for years. (BenNollWeather.com and @BenNoll on Twitter) Our community knows the importance of mental health, but I feel that taking away snow days is negating that sentiment and is unhealthy for our students. Our students and teachers have enough work and enough to deal with. To cancel snow days shows a lack of thought and respect for our students, teachers, and their mental health. We have been through enough.

Please reconsider, Goshen Central. Hold our mental health to the same standard as our physical health.
