U.S. PIRG started this petition to Google, Inc

For nearly a year, Google has banned all independent repair shops from advertising on it's search engine -- while still permitting manufacturers to advertise.

Originally, Google sought to remove ads for scammers posing as repair or IT service companies, and said that they would create a verification system to allow real shops to resume ads. But instead, they blocked all repair and service company ads.

Independent repair is critical for consumers -- repair options help consumers save money and reduce electronic waste. Join us in telling Google: Lift your ban on independent repair companies.

It takes 295 pounds of raw mineral ore and water to make a single iPhone 6. That's a pretty resource-intensive operation for a device that weighs only 4.5 ounces.

But every day, we end up getting rid of hundreds of thousands of resource-intensive phones like the iPhone 6 and building new ones from the ground up, in part because repairs are made more difficult by unnecessary obstacles put up by manufacturers. These obstacles to repair cost consumers, cause lots of waste, and put an avoidable strain on our finite resources.

Manufacturers often have an incentive to push people into replacing a device instead of repairing it. That's why independent repair options are so important, and why we need Right to Repair reforms.

But people need to be able to find those repair options -- and Google is by far the biggest search platform and most important place to run ads for repair shops.

It defies logic to believe that a company like Google would be incapable of coming up with a way to post real repair shop ads while preventing scams.

Maybe they just haven't seen why they need to figure it out. That's why your voice is critical. If enough people speak out, we can make sure Google realizes it would be easier just to do the right thing, and find a way for legitimate repair shops to advertise.

Take action: Tell Google, lift the ban on repair ads.

Thank you,
