Imagine a world in which everyone you know could anonymously spread gossip about you and there was not a single thing you could do about it.

That world exists in the form of a popular app available in the Apple iTunes and Google Play stores called Secret that lets users to share messages with friends, co-workers, and people nearby without revealing their identity. While many posts are benign and even funny others fall under the category of cyberbullying, with slurs ranging from comments about a friend’s weight to judgments about their sexual orientation.

The makers of Secret say there are safeguards in place to prevent abusive behavior but when reporters from Fortune magazine put them to the test they failed miserably. A post about a fictional person’s sexual behavior reported through the site’s system remained up for over 24 hours and was only removed when the reporter reached out to Secret’s public relations team.

The consequences of cyberbullying are real; victims are more likely to suffer from depression, low self esteem, and suicidal thoughts. Young people, Secret’s target demographic, are even more likely to be negatively impacted by online abuse. Suicide is the third leading cause of death for Americans 15 to 24 years old.

Apple and Google claim to be a socially responsible companies and they have the opportunity to make a real difference by removing Secret until better safeguards are in place to prevent cyberbullying.

Please join me in asking Apple and Google to take a stand against virtual abuse and remove the Secret App from their respective online stores.
