Digital predators like Google, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube that profit from speech that puts our community members at risk should not be allowed to sponsor or march in Gay Pride events anywhere in America, especially in the unofficial “LGBT+” capitals of SF, LA, and NYC.

It’s Pride month, and what began as marching together for visibility and safety has become a corporate carnival of rainbow-washing by companies that profit at the expense of our community member’s safety.

YouTube, in the news the most lately, has a harassment and cyber-bullying policy that plainly prohibits “Content that is deliberately posted in order to humiliate someone. Content that makes hurtful and negative personal comments/videos about another person. Content that incites others to harass or threaten individuals on or off YouTube.”  And yet, Steven Crowder has 3 million fans on YouTube, Twitter won’t ban white supremacists or homophobes because they’d have to close Republican political accounts, and Facebook apologizes to homophobic preachers while facilitating genocide in Myanmar. We want these companies in our Pride festivals because why?

Google, Facebook, YouTube, Twitter (GFTY+) - the digital behemoths didn’t accidentally arrive at this situation. It does not matter to GFTY+ or any other digital platform what users watch, as long as they spend more time on the app. And guess what keeps people watching and sharing more than anything? Hateful content that speaks to a person’s darkest fears and prejudices.

GFTY+ not only built a distribution platform for hate speech targeted at the LGBT+ community, they then deliberately optimized for engagement on their platform through the active promotion (news feed, watch next, trending for you) of content that results in members of our community being targets of harassment, death threats, and verbal and physical assaults. They have given a platform and megaphone to hate against our community.

To placate us, GFTY+ then offer vague rules that they do not consistently enforce while offering more lame apologies and empty promises to continue to study and do better. But they all know that the cheapest business solution is to write checks to dozens of Pride festivals across the nation and smack a rainbow on their logo. Sponsors and marchers in our Pride festivals must be allies that value our safety as much as we do; otherwise, we have sold out our community for the profit of a few Bay Area billionaires.

Join me in calling for an end to rainbow washing of digital predators that harm our community members and have no place in Pride celebrations.
