Don’t let a Google lawyer evict us for his personal gain.

Jack Halprin, a wealthy, top lawyer at Google, is kicking us out of our homes. Two years ago, Jack Halprin purchased the seven household building we’ve lived in for years. After evicting two tenants (one which forced him to settle out of court for wrongful eviction), Halprin exploited an increasingly common legal loophole to evict us, the remaining tenants, either to flip and sell the property for an enormous profit, or to occupy the entire seven household building - alone. His actions are contributing to a San Francisco (and increasingly American) epidemic: wealthy individuals evicting families and individuals to line their own pockets or to procure private homes in gentrifying neighborhoods.
We started this petition to a) ask Google to live up to their stated corporate value: “We care about the communities where we live and work” and b) we ask you to stand with us in demanding that Jack Halprin stop our evictions.
My name is Evan Wolkenstein, and I am a high school teacher. I am no enemy of technology; Google’s tools help me teach and empower my students to explore the world around them. I am devastated to experience eviction, however, at the hands of one of Google’s top lawyers, while his company stands by, silent.
Skyrocketing San Francisco rents can spell displacement from the city for long time residents who must find new homes. For example, Susan, who lived in our building for nearly 20 years, was evicted first. Unable to afford an apartment in the city for her and her 9-year-old nephew, she was forced to move out of the city. Now, fighting to remain in our homes and our community are: Alex and Claudia (a taxi driver and public school teacher with a 3-year-old son), Becky (a therapist), Johnny (who works in support services), and myself. Our building was once a mini-community, diverse in ethnic and economic backgrounds, but like Susan, we will all face displacement from San Francisco if Jack Halprin succeeds in evicting us to create his personal mansion or to pocket millions.
Google’s Employee Code of Conduct states: “[Don’t be evil is] about doing the right thing more generally – following the law [and] acting honorably and treating each other with respect... each of us has a personal responsibility to incorporate, and to encourage other Googlers to incorporate, the principles of the Code into our work. And if you... ever think that one of your fellow Googlers or the company as a whole may be falling short of our commitment, don’t be silent. We want – and need – to hear from you.”
Jack Halprin is breaking Google’s own Code of Conduct...and Google needs to hear from you.
Urgent: our February 2015 eviction date is fast approaching. We need your help to stay in our homes and our city. Demand that Google show its commitment to the community and require Jack Halprin to stop the evictions.
Please let Google hear from you today by signing and sharing our petition. From all six of us: thank you.
