The Goodreads Choice Awards is an annual contest wherein readers vote for their favorite book, published that year, in each of 20 categories. The categories are as follows:

Fiction, Mystery & Thriller, Historical Fiction, Fanstasy, Romance, Science Fiction, Horror, Humor, Nonfiction, Memoir & Autobiography, History & Biography, Science & Technology, Food & Cookbooks, Graphic Novels & Comics, Poetry, Debut Novel, Young Adult Fiction, Young Adult Fantasy, Middle Grade & Children's, and Picture Books.

This seems, at first glance, like a pretty comprehensive list. Some might even say there are too many categories. I argue there is one important one missing: Short Story Collections.

Right now, to get a Goodreads Choice Award, a short story collection would be competing in many different categories depending on topic: maybe Fiction, maybe Horror, maybe Mystery & Thriller. The problem with that is that many readers don't read short story collections. This is actually because the short story has been unfairly lumped in with other fiction, ignoring the fact that it is not only a different genre, but a different form. Often the readers of the short story are looking for something different than the readers of a novel.

Goodreads is a hugely powerful platform in the world of books. Adding a category to the Goodreads Choice Awards for short story collections does a few really great things: celebrates the short story collection as a form, brings more attention to it, and gives the community of readers who like short story collections a voice.

Short story collections get left behind when we talk about popular fiction, and people say it's because "not a lot of people read them" or "not a lot of people like them." There's some truth to this. Yes, short story collections are less popular than novels, but that is in part because short story collections aren't given the same platforms as novels are. Its a vicious cycle.

But there's hope for short story lovers everywhere! Short story collections are making a comeback. People are starting to pay more attention, and the attention is well-deserved. (Don't believe me? Check out this list: https://bookriot.com/100-top-notch-short-story-collections/

So, if you like short story collections, and you want to see them get the attention they deserve, lets get Goodreads to add a new category for them in the Goodreads Choice Awards.

When it comes down to it, it's a very easy thing for them to do, and it just makes sense.
