Remove Confederate Monument at Goochland County Courthouse

We The People of Goochland County are calling for the immediate removal of the Confederate Monument at the Goochland County Courthouse. This monument does not stand for the Goochland our community knows and loves, nor does it represent us or our principles of liberty and justice for all. In Goochland County we hold these truths to be self-evident that all people, no matter their race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation, are created as equals. We learned that from Founding Father Thomas Jefferson himself, who was born in Goochland County and should, in fact, have a monument himself.
It is time for not only Goochland, but the rest of Virginia and the entire country to remove these monuments to slavery, sedition, and racial oppression. The monument at the Goochland Courthouse was dedicated June 22, 1918. That date itself should be enough reason as to why it's time for our community to move forward and leave Confederate memorabilia to museums and history books, not public places. Especially the courthouse, a place that ensures equal justice for all. Let it be known that this monument has cast a shadow of injustice and hatred for far too long. Now is the time to change that, so let's stand on the right side of history and change it together.
We stand in solidarity with Charlottesville and those who were injured and/or killed. Our country should be striving forward, not back into the past.
