Hold Goldsmiths accountable for mishandling security during Maryam Namazie event.

During a recent event held at Goldsmiths, University of London by the Atheist, Secularist and Humanist Society (ASH) the security failed to act when hecklers tried to repeatedly disrupt the event.

The guest speaker, Maryam Namazie, a prominent and outspoken human rights activist, was repeatedly interrupted and disrespected by hecklers from the Islamic Society, and security failed to remove them from the event.

In any other setting, when a member of the audience disrupts and event, security will remove them: for example if a person did not switch their mobile phone off during a theatre performance an actor can ask for them to be removed- and security will comply.

In this case the Goldsmiths security team seems to have been unaware of their duties and they have not followed through on attempts to have the offending people removed from the room. The university security needs to be held accountable for not doing their job, and the university needs to be held accountable for contracting a company which provides incompetent staff.

In the case security followed university guidelines- Goldsmiths themselves need to be accountable for not having a policy in place which handles  the security of controversial events safely.  Had the situation escalated, the students who disagreed with the hecklers would also have been put at risk- since security was unable to control them.
