Connor Newson started this petition to Goldsmiths Senior Management Team and

Declaring a climate and ecological emergency is beneficial for recognising the severity of the problem, but also in recognising that the University cares and can do something about it! While the University is not in a position to tackle the crisis alone, it can take measures to reduce its own ecological impact (see list of demands below). This climate and ecological emergency should be treated as an emergency, and this declaration along with its demands will hold the university to act as if it is one.

DEMANDS:

  • Reach Carbon Net Zero by 2025.
  • Conduct an independent environmental audit to recognise and make public the University’s environmental impact.
  • Introduce more climate related modules and degrees, include the individual effects of climate change in relation to each subject within all courses. Whilst dramatically raising awareness through climate education we must focus on the colonial history that has projected such unequal and catastrophic effects of climate breakdown on the global south and other countries that are on the frontline of climate collapse. The climate crisis is a crisis of racism, and as such the University’s institutional inaction with regards to racism and the climate must drastically change.
  • Divest from all fossil fuels. The University currently invests £185,517 in fossil fuels, and although this is a deduction from previous years, it is still not good enough.
  • Switch from banks that have economic ties to fossil fuel companies to a greener bank such as Triodos.
  • Stop the sale of plastic and single-use materials on campus, and offer multi-use materials instead such as keep-cups as opposed to paper coffee cups. This needs to be applied to the campus store and campus cafes.
  • Implement the Green New Deal (supported by the GUCU) by 2020.
  • Switch to a renewable energy supplier.
  • Take an active role as part of the community in pressuring the council to negate illegal levels of pollution on New Cross Road which directly affects Goldsmiths students also.
  • Stop the use of chemical herbicides (such as Monsanto-owned glyphosate) on campus that is damaging the health of staff and students, and leading to ecological desertification on campus.
Relinquish any direct and indirect ties to the arms-trade industry which has proven to have a huge impact on the stability of our climate.
  • Create and implement a climate-focused representative student and staff body that includes regular public assemblies to oversee and make decisions on certain stages and details of these demands.Unlike the Environment and Sustainability group, this student body needs to have genuine power and persuasion, and also needs to have transparency with regards to recruitment and decision-making.
  • Open a dialogue with Chartwells regarding their attitude towards sustainability and environmentalism in catering which is imposed upon staff and students at Goldsmiths, and discuss radical ways to improve this.

In order to regulate the Universities progress in meeting these demands, we would like a 6 month/yearly report published.
