Provide to the GCWSR Inc. in recognition of the intrinsic surfing and natural values of these areas, your expressed support for the proposal that the southern Gold Coast from Snapper to Burleigh, be honoured through designation as a World Surfing Reserve.
World Surfing Reserves, a program of Save The Waves, formally recognises the world’s most significant surfing destinations. Unique environment, outstanding waves, surf culture and history.
A Gold Coast World Surfing Reserve dedication for the southern Gold Coast beaches from Burleigh to Snapper Rocks would enhance the vitality of the Gold Coast economy, the health of our coastal and marine environments and preserve the high quality of life for residents.
In 2012, the Council and State Government in acknowledgement of the natural wonderland of this area supported the declaration of a National Surfing Reserve from Burleigh to Snapper . This year our aim is to seek World recognition. The Gold Coast should be recognised as one of the best beach and point breaks in the world and we should be celebrating the history, culture and our 21 Gold Coast World Surfing Champions.
This dedication will not seek to hinder, obstruct or restrict any activities of the public and Surf Clubs and will acknowledge the City of Gold Coast’s Surf Management Plan as the overriding authority.
There are 7 World Surfing Reserves, Portugal, Malibu, Manly Freshwater, Santa Cruz, Huanchaco, Mexico and Punta de Lobos We aim to be the 8th. There is only one dedication per year and nominations close in September for a 2016 endorsement.
We have the full backing of the Queensland State Government, SLSQ, National & State Associations Boardrider clubs.
All we’re seeking to finalise our application for September 2015, is written support from Gold Coast City Council.
