The Pirate Park at the Palm Beach Parklands is a much-loved playground for locals and visiting families.
There is a major safety concern at this park, however, and that is it's proximity to the water. It can only take a minute for children to wander off if a parent is distracted.
The recent tragic drowning at this spot highlights the need for a fence to protect children against this danger. In the aftermath of the tragedy I spoke to parents who no longer visit the park because they are unable to safety supervise their children there.
I have been in panic at the park - my 2yo child was on the sand of the inlet and 50m away from me before I realised he was gone. If he went out of sight I may have thought he was in one of the hiding spots in the playground and not realised the danger he was in. That day I was juggling a new baby and my toddler on my own, while being sleep deprived, but that's not an uncommon scenario for a parent. Often tired and often distracted.
Fencing the playground would be a simple measure that gives parents peace of mind and protects visitors unfamiliar with the area and the danger of the nearby tidal waters.
