History is written by victors and after Independence, the saga of India's freedom struggle was written by acolytes of Mr Nehru. Consequently the role of the Congress in getting India independence was overplayed and the role of other important players underplayed. Evidence suggests that the British left India because they were unnerved by the spirit of nationalism that had begun to pervade the Indian army. Even after winning World War II,the British feared that taking a leaf out of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's INA , the entire Indian army would rise in revolt and evict them out of the country. Fearing this, the British had drawn up a plan to evacuate all the 43000 Britons in the country which was code named : Operation Gondola. In 1956, Clement Atlee ( the British PM when India became Independent) on a private visit to Calcutta told the acting Governor of West Bengal, P V Chakravarty that the suspected loyalty of Indian army towards the British- that had been eroded by the INA - was the reason why they left India. Asked about the role of Quit India movement and Mahatma Gandhi in pushing the decision, he said:'Minimal.' In view of this history books should be revised and the role of Netaji & INA in kicking the British out of India recognized and given their due place. A nation is not a nation if it does not know its history. 70 years after Independence, the people have a right to know their true history and why the British actually left India.
