Glen Eira Community started this petition to Glen Eira City Council

Reflection Garden

Over the lockdown, the community of Glen Eira engaged in a small garden that started out as four flowers that where planted as a memorial on May 4th for the four policemen that where killed on April 22nd. Many people of the Glen Eira community have since then planted flowers and herbs, helping and tending to the garden. This small garden has brought people together, and symbolises to help people handle their mental health issues from the loneliness of isolation, so they have something that they can personally contribute and care for. The Reflection Garden has helped people make connections, and become friends during the pandemic.

A few days ago we put five happy avocado trees in bags for people to take near the garden, and less than two hours later all the plantas where gone. This was really meaningful because we could not fit the avocado trees in our yard, and the fact that people from the community wanted to take and care for them was really considerate. The reason that we are bringing this to your attention is because the Glen Eira Council has pointed out that this garden may need to be removed, because there is no permit for it to be there, and because it might be a tripping hazard. It is not a hazard in any way because it is away from the path, and a fair way away from the train tracks to be safe. The council is not considering all the benefits from how the garden brings together people, and that the community has done so much to help it. We are keen to open a discussion with the council on this matter.

The Council has not yet said whether they will remove it, but we want to make this petition before they make a decision on what to do about it.
