A few years ago, Glasgow University pledged to divest from fossil fuels. However, that’s not the only unsustainable industry that the university is making profit from. Our university has invested approximately £1.4 million in arms dealers and arms manufacturing companies. Three particularly problematic companies that are being directly supported by the University’s fund managers are BAE Systems, Cobham PLC, and QinetiQ. This is in direct opposition to the University’s policy on Socially Responsible Investment.
A university that brands itself as progressive and liberal, a university for “world changers”, should not be allowed to reinvest tuition fees and money received from the Scottish government in an industry that promotes tensions and armed conflicts all around the world. We demand that Glasgow University invests in a sustainable future. We need to collectively voice our objection to investments that fuel wars and cause death - this is the only way we will be able to achieve meaningful change.
We urge the University of Glasgow to take the following actions:
1. Acknowledge the failure of the aforementioned companies to comply with the University's Socially Responsible Investment policy and re-assess the validity of the decisions made by the fund managers employed by the University.
2. Request the Investment Advisory Committee or the Pension Scheme Trustees to
engage in proceedings to disinvest in the companies.
3. Ban said companies from campus events, including Careers Fairs, Post-Graduate Schemes, etc.
4. Pledge to fully divest from the Arms Manufacturing Industry and the Arms Dealing Industry at the earliest convenience.
