Stop the $1.5 billion relocation of the Powerhouse Museum

This petition had 40 supporters

The Powerhouse Museum is a Sydney landmark. It is a triumph of museum curation and education and no Sydney student's schooling would be complete without a visit. It sits on an important historic site which has served as the museum's home for almost 30 years. The museum has over 400,000 exhibits and has existed for more than 125 years.

Parramatta deserves increased cultural funding and promotion, currently only receiving 5% of such state funding, but it should not come at the expense or risk to a vibrant existing museum. Cost predictions have blown out and are now being reported around $1.5 billion. The proposed site is prone to flooding which is an unacceptable risk to the many valuable, irreplaceable exhibits. The new site is a smaller area and may risk demolishing heritage buildings in Parramatta.

To cover the cost of the relocation the existing museum site will be sold for development. This would be a considerable loss to the heritage of Sydney, especially given that the current museum exists sympathetically to its heritage location.

This is a decision being forced on the people of Sydney, something no one actually asked for. It is a gross misuse of public funds and an attack on the heritage of Sydney. How many heritage buildings will be left when the NSW state government is done selling out to developers?

This is another wasteful, unwanted plan; $2 billion tearing down and rebuilding our stadiums and another $1.5 billion moving our museum.

We need to save the Powerhouse and make the NSW Premier and government see sense. Contact your local NSW MP, Minister for the Arts Don Harwin, or Premier Berejiklian. Save NSW $1.5 billion, save our heritage.
